Fashion Designer

Perhaps center to the art of fashion, aside from the beautiful, fashionable pieces, is the fashion designer. Fashion designers create not only clothes to showcase one’s vanity and fashion sense, fashion designers are a modern-day equivalent to an artist. They create everyday art that can be displayed in the biggest galleries: the streets, the office, the world.

Fashion designers have the compulsive desire to create art. They mix their knowledge of the practical and the artistic and create the most useful and most beautiful things we wear like clothes, bags, belts, shoes, among other things. Fashion designers not only make functional pieces, they must mix this functionality with their knowledge of aesthetics of beauty and design.

The very good fashion designers understand the basic principles of art and design like line, texture, color and proportion. Fashion designers should have a deep and encompassing understanding of what will work for every consumer. There are different kinds of fashion designers. There are big names like Prada, or Oscar De La Renta, or Gucci, that design haute-couture--or clothing pieces that are made with a specific individual in mind. Many of these well-known fashion designers also venture into another branch of fashion design which is off-the-rack clothing like Calvin Klein or Dorothy Perkins.

There is also that branch which offers mass-market designs, or pieces for the everyday consumer which specializes for casual, street or everyday wear. Today, a fashion designer may be classified by the kinds of clothes that he or she markets their product for.

A fashion designer can design for women’s wear, men’s wear, kids’ wear, formal wear, or even accessories. There are many good fashion designers out there, the trick is to find one who will best fit your style, your purpose and of course your budget.
