Polo Shirts

Polo shirts

Polo shirts are classic clothing pieces that everyone—men and women alike must have. The difference factor in polo shirts is its well-known collar and its two or three button placket.

The name polo shirt came from the sport polo as it is what the polo players wore during their games. Though the “old version” of the popular polo shirt, as we know it today, is stiffly starched long-sleeved collared shirt. This version of the polo shirt is then adopted by several other sports like tennis and eventually golf. However, this old design of polo shirts are rather cumbersome and stiff even for their players and thus the sports’ players often complained about its style.

Then came Rene Lacoste. He is attributed to be the pioneer of the modern polo shirt. In 1926, he wore the design he created of a white, short-sleeved three-button shirt with a collar standing out from the placket. This prototype shirt designed by Lacoste, or The Crocodile as he is more popularly known, is the first version of a polo shirt, so to say.

The polo shirt is an essential piece of clothing, albeit fashion statement for sports enthusiasts and professionals alike.

Different areas of fashion or areas of culture call the polo shirt differently. It could be called the golf shirt for some or the tennis shirt for others. Whatever the difference of name given to the polo shirt, it remains one thing: a classic must-have for everyone.
