Avatar bumps off Titanic in Box office haul
After holding on to the top spot for more than a decade, Titanic finally gives way to another blockbuster monster: Avatar.
James Cameron’s visually orgasmic offering finally replaces his other boxoffice creation as the biggest international release of all time during this weekend. The futuristic 3D film is on the verge of claiming its worldwide crown, which also includes North American receipts as tallied by its distributor, 20th Century Fox last Sunday.
The News corp-owned studio proudly excl
aims that “Avatar” has sold $1.841 billion (1.142 billion pounds) worth of tickets worldwide during its one and a half month reign at the box office. Avatar is a day away from surpassing the seemingly impossible record of its Cameron predecessor which raised $1.843 billion in 1997-1998.
The majority of its box office earnings come from international sales amounting to $1.288 billion, surpassing the $1.242 billion haul of “Titanic.” Also, a huge chunk of Avatar’s earnings comes from 3D screenings with Imax saying its big-screen engagements have sold a record $134 million worth of tickets worldwide.
Surprisingly, if inflation is factored in the equation, the biggest movie in America according to ticket sales is still 1939’s “Gone with the Wind” with sales of almost $1.5 billion, according to box office website “Box Office Mojo- which places “Avatar” as 26th overall for inflation.
The high quality offered by this 3D masterpiece made it irresistible even to stingy people from rushing to movie houses. We promise you the same quality for our fashion apparel and our exciting offers here at Brandneusene.
