Fassbender set to play younger Magneto in upcoming X-Men movie

Michael Fassbender of the Inglorious Basterds fame is, according to some sources, signing a contract to play the part of Charles Xavier’s archnemesis, Magneto in the next X-Men flick entitled X-Men: First Class.

The German-Irish actor landed the coveted role amidst many other talented hopefuls. His remarkable performance in Inglorious Basterds and Band of Brothers might have convinced the casting crew that he deserves to play the part. His role in 300 and the fact that he is a part of of BAFTA award winning film Hunger beefed up his campaign to land the role.

The 33 year old actor will play the younger version of Sir Ian Mckellen’s character in the X-Men movie that will track the beginnings of the superhero saga. The movie will focus on the early years of Erik Lensherr or Magneto, to be played by Michael Fassbender, and Charles Xavier, which will have British actor James McAvoy play the part.

X-Men: First Class will also star some young and promising talents in Aaron Johnson from Kick Ass and Jack Houston, the nephew of Anjelica Houston.

Filming of the X-Men movie will start in August next year and is set for a summer release in June 2011.
